The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup from Chevrolet, a division of General Motors. The first General Motors collection was launched under the Isuzu KB brand, sold in 1972 as a Chevrolet SUV. In 1973, the Arab oil embargo forced GM to think about designing a compact truck in their own country. When creating elements of the chassis of other models (mainly G platform) were used. For the first time, the S-series pickup was introduced in 1982 as a version of the GMC trademark with the name S-15, and was later renamed the GMC Sonoma. The GMC and Chevrolet models were identical with the exception of the grid. The width of the car was similar to that of the old cars based on the H platform. In 1983, two closed versions of 2 doors were introduced: the S-10 Blazer and the Jimmy S-15.

General Motors was the second (after the Jeep company), which presented similar pills. In 1984, reinforced models with suspension designed for all terrain were launched. In March 1990, 4-door models such as the Oldsmobile Bravada were introduced. As mentioned above, in 1991, the GMC S-15 model was renamed GMC Sonoma. In the same year, the GMC Syclone model appears. This truck had a 4.3-liter V35 engine, which produced 195 hp. During the year, a total of 860 GMC Sonoma GT cars were produced. For the period from 1982 to 1993. And there were only three variants of transmissions: 4-speed automatic transmission 4L60E and two manual gearboxes NV3500 (for the V6 engine) and NV1500 (it was used since 1996 for the I4 engine). In 1994, a four-wheel drive version was also launched with an off-road options package, called ZR2. Its features include: a higher seating position, a reinforced suspension, gas shock absorbers and a Vortec 4300 V6 engine. Unlike the first generation of the S-10, which used 14-inch wheels, in the second generation, 15x 6.5 inches were used for versions without traction, and wheels of 15×7 inches for all-wheel drive. The Xtreme and ZQ8 models used 16-inch wheels. The ZQ8 and Xtreme models included options such as a lower setting (2 inches), improved stabilizer bars, an improved steering mechanism and Decarbon or Bilstein gas dampers. All these options were also offered as an independent update package. In 1996, the Vortec 4300 CMFI V6 engine was replaced by its updated version of the Vortec 4300 CSFI with a volume of 4.3 liters. In 2001, a 4-door version of the Chevrolet S-10 СrewСab appeared with two rows of seats.
Chevrolet presents the new generation of the S10 , this model as it comes with several modifications. The main S10 was launched in 2012, then improved its power in 2013, for 2016 it suffered a restyling, the last modification of the S10 was seen in February 2018 with particle filters . The changes are not many, but to highlight we have to continue with what is doing competition from rivals such as Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, the new Chevrolet S10 to put aside the shortage of airbags. This version 2019 adds side and curtain airbags, in addition to the two obligatory frontals. This is one of the main novelties of the 2019 line. However, the six airbags of the Chevrolet S10 2019 will be available only for the most expensive version of the range. On the other hand, the LS, LT and Advantage versions start to leave the factory with electronic control of stability and traction control . These elements used to be exclusivity of the most expensive configurations. Other changes are the Chevrolet S10 High Country version that brings resources such as tire pressure monitoring, lane departure warning, frontal collision warning and the OnStar system that has safety, emergency, navigation and vehicle recovery services . To finish with all the new features of version 2019 of the S10, we have included the blue colors Old Blue Eyes, which is offered along with the Summit White, Graphite Gray, Black Ouro Black, Chilli Red and Edible Berries Red.
There are no changes in engines, both in the simple cabin and the double brings the already known engine that is the 2.8 turbodiesel that develops 200 horses and 440 Nm (500 Nm with automatic transmission). You can buy both manual and automatic six-speed. Bring simple traction back or 4 × 4.
First, the good news. Like several segment pick-ups, all S10s now come standard with stability control, traction control, descent control and hill start assistance. Very well. Now the bad news. The entire S10 range, including the expensive High Country, offers just two front airbags. Many of its rivals already offer six and up to seven airbags (Hilux and Ranger) in the most equipped variants. More bad news: Isofix still does not offer anchors for children’s chairs. Being a restyling – and not a new model – the S10 is not required by law to equip it. Although, once again, their rivals are already adding them. The LTZ and High Country versions have new safety devices: frontal collision risk alert, lane change warning and the aforementioned tire pressure monitoring. At the moment, there are no independent crash test results for the S10. Toyota and Ford already sponsored crash tests of the new Hilux and Ranger with LatinNCAP . It would be interesting for GM to follow the same path.
MOTOR and TRANSMISSION
Here there are no great news. And that is good news. The VM Motori engine continues to reign under the bonnet. It is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel, with 200 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque. The version with automatic box yields even more: 500 Nm . Together with the five-cylinder Puma 3.2 engine from the Ranger, the S10 offers the most powerful impeller in the segment (at least until the arrival of the AmarokV6 , confirmed for next year in Argentina). The big difference in favor of Chevrolet is that this 200 donkey engine is offered throughout the range. You have it up to the version with simple cabin. It is a virtue that few know. It is not known if it is because the demand for Single Cab is very small in our market. Or if it’s because GM never communicated it clearly. To reduce noise and vibration, new brackets were installed for the engine and transmission. In addition, the electric fan was replaced by a fan with viscous clutch (consumes less energy). And a permanent monitoring of the battery charge was installed, to use the alternator only when necessary (reduces fuel consumption and extends the life of the battery). The transmissions remain without news. There is a manual or automatic box, always with six gears. The traction can be rear or four wheels, in this case with gearbox. The Chevrolet S10 is equipped with the powerful 2.8 Turbo Diesel engine that delivers 200 hp at 3600 rpm, with torque of 440 NM in manual versions and 500 NM in automatic. In Argentina, it is marketed in single cabin and double cabin and 4 levels of equipment: LS, LT, LTZ and top of range High Country (HC) in versions 4 × 2 and 4 × 4.
Unique segment with total connectivity system
In addition to strength and robustness, the Chevrolet pickup stands out for its sophistication and safety elements and total connectivity systems, such as the MyLink multimedia (compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay) and OnStar, available on the LTZ and HC versions, which offers Emergency, Security, Navigation, Concierge and Advanced Diagnostic services at the touch of a button in the vehicle mirror or through a smartphone application. The S10 also has one of the most complete safety equipment in the category. In addition to the automatic notification service in case of OnStar accident, the lane change warning and the frontal collision warning are highlighted, present in the LTZ and High Country configurations, providing greater safety in handling and collaborating in the prevention of accidents. The lane change alert has a camera on the top of the windshield that reads the lanes of the route and issues a warning whenever it perceives that the vehicle is unintentionally leaving the lane. If the turn signal light is activated, the mechanism understands that the maneuver is intentional and does not take action.
The frontal collision warning is another very useful equipment in the day to day. Through it, the driver can electronically establish a minimum distance with respect to the front vehicle, for example, be alerted if the other car undergoes a sudden speed reduction. In addition to red lights flashing at the base of the windshield, an alarm sounds through the speakers of this pickup. Also, it has in all its versions, address with electric assistance, which allows a faster and more accurate response capacity, as well as less effort in maneuvers. HC 2019 versions will be equipped with 6 airbags (front, side and curtain), as well as collapsible steering column, side protection bars, front and rear fog lights, anti-theft alarm, front seat belts with height adjustment and pretensioner, LED daytime running lights, engine immobilizer, headlamp height adjustment, third stop light and engine protector shield, among others. In addition, it has starter on slopes (HSA) and descent (HDC). The High Country version has a customized equipment: lateral stirrups, exclusive rolled, chromed doors and rigid maritime canvas. This version also has a direction with intelligent progressive electric assistance, side windows with remote opening and closing mechanism, and tire pressure monitoring system. As for the interior equipment, it has cruise control, on-board computer, automatic front air conditioning, central locking of doors with remote control, front and rear lifts (Express up / down driver), adjustable height steering column, seat of the driver with 6-way power regulation, center front armrest with storage compartments, center armrest in the rear seats, pocket for the backrest of the front seats, among others.
Performance and Comfort
The Chevrolet S10 has the innovative technology present in the propulsion system with automatic transmission. This is the CPA (Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber) that helps to reduce the levels of noise and vibrations typical of a diesel vehicle to levels similar to those of luxury diesel cars. In addition, the system optimizes the coupling of the transmission in lower revolutions, providing the sensation of better acceleration and recovery of speed. This is because the vehicle responds more easily to the accelerator pedal controls.
